Attic insulation – how to reduce heat loss before winter

Attic insulation – how to reduce heat loss before winter

Did you know that up to 30% of heat can be lost through an uninsulated attic? Poor thermal protection means higher heating costs in winter and faster overheating of rooms in summer. Insulating the attic is therefore one of the most effective and affordable ways to improve living comfort and energy efficiency of your home.

Attic insulation – how to reduce heat loss before winter

Why insulate your attic?

Warm air rises, which means that in uninsulated buildings, a significant amount of heat escapes through the ceiling and roof structure. Properly installed insulation helps reduce heat loss, maintain a more stable indoor temperature and lower the energy required for heating and cooling.

Before starting work, check the roof and substrate condition. Any leaks, moisture, mould, or damage must be repaired before the insulation is installed.

Which insulation material should you choose?

The most commonly used materials include stone or glass wool, wood fibre, and EPS, XPS or PIR boards. In an unused attic, the floor is usually insulated, while in a habitable attic, insulation is installed along the roof slopes.

Regardless of the material, the insulation layer must be continuous, the boards securely fixed, and all joints, gaps and service penetrations carefully filled. This is where two product groups with different but complementary roles come into play: TKK PU FOAM for filling gaps and TKK PU FIX for bonding insulation boards.

TKK PU FOAM TOP FOAM – for filling and insulating

Even high-quality insulation cannot perform effectively if gaps remain around edges, rafters or service penetrations, allowing cold air to enter.

TKK PU FOAM TOP FOAM is a polyurethane foam designed for filling construction openings, gaps and hard-to-reach areas that conventional insulation cannot cover. It is suitable for joints around structural elements and openings around pipes, cables and ventilation systems. After application, it expands to fill even irregularly shaped gaps and, once cured, provides good thermal insulation.

If you need to fill an individual opening through which cold air is entering or prevent a local thermal bridge, TKK PU FOAM TOP FOAM is the right solution.

TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE – for bonding insulation boards

For more comprehensive attic insulation, we recommend installing insulation boards with the purpose-designed polyurethane adhesive TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE.

This one-component, low-expansion PU adhesive lets you fix thermal insulation boards quickly, cleanly, and efficiently. It is suitable for bonding EPS and XPS boards, stone wool and polyurethane insulation boards to substrates such as concrete, brick and wood. It can also be used to fill small gaps between boards.

Because no mixing or added water is required, the process is faster and cleaner than working with cement-based adhesive. In an accessible attic with a properly prepared substrate, the work can also be carried out by a reasonably skilled homeowner.

Two tasks, two purpose-designed solutions

  • TKK PU FOAM TOP FOAM fills openings and gaps and helps prevent cold air from entering.
  • TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE secures insulation boards and enables the installation of a more complete insulation layer.

The two products complement each other when insulating an attic: the PU adhesive secures the boards, while the PU foam fills individual gaps, penetrations and hard-to-reach areas.

A tip for working in colder weather

If you are starting the project in late autumn or winter, choose a formulation designed for lower application temperatures. TKK PU FOAM TOP FOAM WINTER can be applied at temperatures down to –10 °C, while TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE WINTER can be used down to –5 °C. Always follow the instructions on the packaging and in the technical data sheet.

With high-quality insulation material and the carefully planned use of both products, you can reduce heat loss and improve the comfort of your home – even if you only start the project just before winter.
